Part 1: The Ruskin Polygon<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Born in London in 1819, Ruskin made his first visit to Europe at the age of six and started drawing lessons at twelve. The precocious child encountered the pictorial beauty of J. M. W. Turner in 1832 and the natural beauty of the Alpine scenery in the following year. After entering the University of Oxford in 1837, Ruskin marked his debut as an art critic with the first volume of Modern Painters<\/em> published in 1843. Guided by his keen, observant eye, his critical attention turned to Victorian natural and social environments as the cradle of artistic creation. In the 1870s, he embarked on practical efforts to enhance social welfare and environmental conservation, always searching for ideal ways of life and living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1-1   Ruskin the Art Critic<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruskin is particularly well known for his advocacy of J. M. W. Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites as well as his harsh criticism of J. M. Whistler. The art critic also rediscovered 15th-century Italian painters and ardently admired Gothic architecture. Devoting his attention not only to art criticism but to art education, he began in 1854 to teach a drawing class at the Working Men\u2019s College in London. In 1870 he delivered a series of inaugural lectures as the first Slade Professor of Fine Art at Oxford, founding a drawing school in the University in the following year. These educational endeavours brought about two of his seminal works: The Elements of Drawing<\/em> (1857) and Lectures on Art<\/em> (1870).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1-2   Ruskin the Social Reformer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origins of Ruskin\u2019s social ideas can be traced back to his travels to the Alps in the 1840s. In a sharp contrast to the beauty of Alpine mountains, he saw the poverty and illness that plagued the life of local peasants. It was in the 1870s that this Victorian thinker put his ideas into practice at the Guild of St George and theSt George\u2019s Museum, both founded in Sheffield, an industrial town located in the North of England. The social ideas and practices of Ruskin, who pointed to negative aspects of industrial capitalism, had an extensive influence on the Arts and Crafts movement, the settlement movement, and guild socialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1-3   Ruskin the Environmentalist<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Essential to life are \u2018Pure Air, Water, and Earth.\u2019 — Ruskin, a pioneer environmentalist, wrote in Letter 5 of Fors Clavigera<\/em> in 1871. In the 1870s he protested against the extension of railways into the Lake District, and in his 1884 lectures \u2018The Storm-Cloud of the Nineteenth Century\u2019, hepresciently related the atmospheric changes of the time to air pollution by industrial smoke. His profound ideas concerning the natural environment inspired the establishment of the National Trust in 1895. Ruskin the environmentalist represents another side of the Ruskin polygon, which takes on a new significance in this era of climate change and environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part 2: Guild of St George<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruskin\u2019s theory of art asserted that the decline of art symbolises the decline of nature and of social morals. He extended this argument to political economy, and in 1860, started a series of essays named \u2018Unto this Last\u2019 in Cornhill Magazine<\/em>. Although his new economic theory that people\u2019s lives should be the source of wealth was condemned by his contemporaries, it eventually evolved into a project to revive the rural society of the Middle Ages, as opposed to the mercantile economy and metropolitan-centred society. Thus was born the St George\u2019s Guild in the late 1870s.  Today, through its various activities, it is keeping Ruskin\u2019s torch alight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2-1 Cultural Activities<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the main pillars of Guild\u2019s activities is education through art. The first Guild Museum was established in Walkley, Sheffield, in 1875 as a community hub for the worker of the city. The collection includes medieval manuscripts, mineral specimens, copies of old masters\u2019 paintings, sculptures, and architectural sketches and drawings. The natural scientific interests and educational ideals which formed the essence of Ruskin\u2019s artistic theory are clearly visible here. The Ruskin Collection can currently be viewed in the Millennium Gallery, part of the Sheffield Museums Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2-2 Community Work<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second pillar is regional regeneration through the revival and protection of traditional handicrafts. Industrialisation has deprived rural communities of their inherent value and caused environmental devastation. Ruskin aimed to revitalise communities by supporting handicrafts using local materials. In Laxey on the Isle of Man, he helped to revive the local woollen industry, which led to the founding of St George\u2018s Mills in 1881. Also, the promotion of hand-spinning and hand-weaving in Langdale led to the empowerment of local women. Ruskin became the first Master of the Guild and recruited like-minded individuals, known as Companions. They aimed to create a community which would promote physical and mental health, and the well-being of the members. Ruskin first purchased land near Sheffield in 1876 and initiated co-operative farming as St George\u2019s Farm. Pieces of land purchased and donated not only by Ruskin but also by other Companions and subsequent Masters have become focal points of the environmental movement. Today, addressing climate change stands as one of the Guild\u2019s core social activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Part 3: Community Design<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ruskin & Morris Center of Osaka was founded in 2006 as private archives by Norio Tsuyuki, and transitioned into a general incorporated foundation in 2019. In collaboration with studio-L, the Ruskin & Morris Center of Osaka is now re-launching as a public facility. Situated in the town of Nose, the Center manages precious collection associated with John Ruskin and William Morris, the latter of whom was influenced by Ruskin\u2019s thought. Over a span of 30 years, Tsuyuki collected these materials from antiquarian booksellers overseas. The goal of the Center is to utilise those material for academic research and to serve as a cultural hub enriching the local community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impressed by Ruskin\u2019s economic theories, as introduced in the 1991 treatise Nihon-Bunmei to Kindai-Seiy\u014d <\/em>[Japanese civilisation and the modern West] by Heita Kawakatsu, Norio Tsuyuki started collecting Ruskinalia and conducting research on him. Tsuyuki Collection comprises the first edition of Modern Painters<\/em> (5 vols), a printed proof of Lectures on Art<\/em> with Ruskin\u2019s annotations, approximately 200 autograph letters, and watercolours by Ruskin. The Ruskin & Morris Center of Osaka preserves and manages these materials, and intends to utilise them for research purposes as well as the dissemination of Ruskin\u2019s ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Ruskin & Morris Center of Osaka those who share the common vision for an ideal future society come together and actively explore ways in which each can contribute. Currently, renovations of the facilities and archive collections are undertaken by volunteers including local residents, students, and researchers. Ruskin praised Gothic architecture, in which craftsmen felt joy in collaboration. The Ruskin & Morris Center embodies Ruskin\u2019s concept of fellowship by hosting various programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruskin spent his last years in Brantwood, on the shore of Coniston Water, surrounded by beautiful natural scenery. Ruskin was actively engaged with the local community interacting with residents though lectures and discussions on various topics, including the value of labour. The town of Nose, home to the Ruskin & Morris Center of Osaka, is also blessed with a beautiful natural environment. Our objective is to make the Center a hub where people can convene, converse, and learn amidst the beauty of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
